Alternatives to BT Business Broadband

When standard business broadband is no longer enough: the signs you have outgrown it, what to look at instead, and how dedicated, managed connectivity compares.

BT Business Broadband is a widely used, sensibly priced service, and for many businesses it is the right choice. Businesses usually look for an alternative when the connection has become critical — when an outage stops work, upload is not enough, or faults need faster, more hands-on handling than a broadband product provides. Asptech designs, supplies and manages dedicated and resilient connectivity for those businesses.

When BT Business Broadband is the right answer

If you are a small team, your systems are in the cloud and an outage means working from phones for a few hours, there is nothing wrong with mainstream business broadband from BT or any of the other large providers. It is widely available, inexpensive and quick to install. We would not try to talk you out of it.

Signs you have outgrown broadband

  • An outage stops the business

Not slows it — stops it. Phones, orders, stock and production all depend on the connection.

  • Upload is the bottleneck

Teams calls break up, cloud saves crawl and backups never finish, while the download speed test looks fine.

  • Waiting for an engineer

A fault means days of appointments when the business needs hours — and nobody is chasing it on your behalf.

  • Juggling suppliers

One company for the line, another for the phones, someone else for the firewall, and each one says the problem lies with the others.

What the alternative looks like

The alternative is usually not a different broadband package. It is a different kind of service: a dedicated leased line, often with an independent backup, designed around how you work and managed by a team that takes ownership of faults.

This does not mean avoiding BT’s network. Openreach, part of BT Group, runs much of the UK’s local fibre and copper, and a great many leased lines use it; BT sells leased lines itself. The difference is the product, the design and who is responsible when something goes wrong — not whose fibre is in the street.

Broadband compared with managed dedicated connectivity

A general comparison. Specific products and terms vary between providers.
Typical business broadbandManaged dedicated connectivity
BandwidthShared with other usersDedicated to you
UploadUsually lower than downloadUsually symmetric
SLABasic, with faster-repair options on some productsContracted repair targets
FaultsYou report them and arrange access for an engineerWe monitor, diagnose and chase the carrier for you
Firewall and routingUsually the provider’s routerDesigned for your network and managed
BackupAdded separately, if at allDesigned in, on an independent route where feasible
CostLowerHigher — justified only where downtime is expensive

Common questions

Can we keep our phone numbers if we move?
Usually, yes. Numbers can normally be ported to a new phone service, and we manage the timing so that no calls are lost.
Do we have to wait for our current contract to end?
Not necessarily, but renewal is usually the cheapest time to move. A leased line takes weeks or months to install, so start the conversation well before the renewal date.
Would a leased line from you run over BT’s network?
It might. We choose the carrier based on what is available at your address, the cost, and the route — which matters for resilience. Sometimes that is Openreach infrastructure, sometimes another carrier’s.

  • Leased line vs business broadband

How leased lines and business broadband differ on cost, contention, upload, SLAs, repair, availability and installation — and when each is the sensible choice.

  • Dedicated business internet connection

Dedicated internet for businesses that stop when the connection does: uncontended, usually symmetric, SLA-backed, and managed by one team that owns the faults.

  • Resilient business internet and backup connectivity

Backup internet designed around what downtime costs you — primary and backup circuits, automatic failover, and routes that are genuinely independent of each other.
