Alternatives to Virgin Media Business broadband
When Virgin Media Business broadband is no longer enough: why businesses look further, how a dedicated managed connection differs, and when to stay put.
Virgin Media Business broadband offers high download speeds over its own network and suits a lot of businesses well. Businesses usually look for an alternative when they need more upload, more consistent performance, a stronger SLA, a backup on a separate network, or one team taking ownership of faults. Asptech designs, supplies and manages that kind of connectivity.
When it is the right choice
Where it is available, Virgin Media’s business broadband can deliver very good download speeds at a sensible price. For an office that mostly downloads, and where an outage is a nuisance rather than a crisis, it can be a good fit — and we will say so.
Why businesses look further
Upload
Many broadband packages, on any network, offer far less upload than download. Video calls, backups, CCTV and remote access all lean on upload.
Consistency
Shared networks are busiest when everyone is working. If performance varies with the time of day, contention is the likely cause.
A backup on a different network
If your primary connection runs on one network, your backup should not. Pairing it with a connection on another carrier, or on mobile, gives genuine resilience.
Fault ownership
When a connection fails, someone has to diagnose it, raise it with the network and chase it. With managed connectivity, that is us rather than your office manager.
The same network, used differently
Virgin Media Business also sells dedicated leased-line services, and its network is one of several that UK circuits are delivered over. Moving to a leased line is not about avoiding a particular network; it is about moving from a shared broadband product to a dedicated, managed service.
For resilience, knowing which network your current connection uses is valuable. If your broadband runs on Virgin Media’s network, a primary or backup on a different carrier gives you two genuinely separate routes rather than two services that can fail together.
Common questions
- Can we keep our Virgin Media connection as a backup?
- Often, yes, provided it takes a different route from the new primary. An existing broadband service can make a sensible, inexpensive backup — we check the routes before relying on it.
- What happens to our static IP addresses?
- Addresses from one provider generally cannot move to another, so new ones are issued. We plan the change — firewall rules, DNS, VPNs and anything suppliers have allow-listed — so that the cutover holds no surprises.
- How much more will it cost?
- More than broadband: a dedicated line typically costs several times as much each month. Whether that is worth it depends on what an outage costs you, and we will help you work that out honestly.
